Teluk Bahang, a senctuary for over 120 species of rare and exotic
tropical butterflies. The farm is complete whit a hatchery and
a " Preserved Butterflies Of The World " museum.

foot of Penang Hill, Stroll through the main gardens,learn about tahe

Scenes & Activities in The Gardens
The Penang Botanic Gardens is Penang's unique asset, being the only
gardens of its kind in Malaysia. Various floras unknown to many are
found in these gardens. Besides being a botanic centre, the garden is a
popular recreational spot.Early in the morning, many people come to the
Gardens to jog, exercise and enjoy clean fresh air. As the day goes by,
hundred of visitors come to sit at the lawn, by the stream or underneath
the shade of trees.
Recreational Activities
Come morning … from dawn to dusk a lot of people from all walks of life,
individuals or in groups, old or young converge at the gardens to
perform their daily exercises such as brisk walking, jogging, running,
trekking, aerobic dance and performances like 'Tai Chi Kuan' or 'Qigong'.The
Botanic Gardens has been the main focal point for these groups to
perform their daily exercises and to breathe in cool and refreshing air.
Not only that, the presence of lush greenery provide a good source of
oxygen to help refresh the physical and mental well being of an
individual.
Surroundings
Looking at the surrounding forest, you will note that the tropical
rainforest are not all evergreen or uniform. Different trees have
different hues and appearances. Their canopies also vary in shapes and
sizes. Some trees are deciduous, causing them to become bare at certain
time of the year. Prior to that, their leaves turn an "autumn colour".
Formal Gardens
Among the many highlights of these gracious gardens is the
British-styled Formal Garden with beds and borders of flowering and
foliage plants, all in harmonious hues and leaf shapes.The design of the
formal garden has been upgraded and restructured to give a Malaysian
identity in perspective. A new facelift comprising of interlocking
pavers and ponds with fountains have been upgraded with various types of
flowering and foliage plants planted to give a long lasting impact.
The Lily Pond
This
area is considered to be pleasant and enchanting, with cool, serene and
tranquil ambience. Visitors to this area will definitely feel the
difference and be mesmerized with the vegetation and myriads of greenery
which sets the lily pond apart from other surroundings.With a background
of a hilly terrain on the left and right side, the lily pond is covered
with varied natural vegetations of the primary forest. With a smooth
waterfall flowing into the pond, this area is beautifully landscaped
similar to the surrounding natural vegetations and the pond is filled
and decked with aquatic plants.
Fern Rockery
A cool and clean stream ideally links this charming and serene spot. The
rocky river banks are characteristic feature of this ideal spot where
water gushes and meanders from the waterfall and cascades into the
stream below the middle bridge.The surrounding scenes is cool and calm,
abound with wide variety of distinct flora and fauna that is often found
in the tropical rainforests. The myriads of fern types such as
Selaginella sp, ground covers such as Kaempferia pulchra, Heliconia
sp, Caladium sp, Acanthus montanus, Tacca integrifolia and others
are found.
Ornamental Plant House
The amazing and dazzling display of wide variety of colourful ornamental
flowering plants is a showpiece of the bio-diversity of the Malaysian
flora. The myriads of ornamental flowering plants come in various
shapes, forms, sizes and colours.
The Perdana Plant House was set-up as a showcase of the various species
grown in the other plant houses, making it a one-stop centre for
visitors who have limited time at the Gardens.
Tropical Rainforest Jungle Track
This track starts from the Gazebo and steadily proceeds from the
granite-cemented path of 1.5km and meandering through the steep gradient
of the hilly terrain abound with natural vegetation of the primary
forests.Along this jungle track, there are various types of flora and
natural vegetations typical of the tropical rainforests and the fauna
are abuzz with soothing rhythmic chirpings - sounds mimic of little
creatures, birds or even the monkeys.Normally, the public or individuals
especially the adventurers hike up this track to breathe in fresh clean
air away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This jungle track is
considered to be exciting as it releases tension and soothes the mind in
this hectic everyday life.
Fern House
The
Fern House contains various species of ferns, as they are considered
special in the plant kingdom because they are higher plants compared to
other species of plants.Various species of local and exotic ferns are
found intermingling and mixed with the famed monkey cup or Venus
fly-trap, gingers, torch gingers, black lily, anthurium and
spathiphyllum. Ferns of exotic ornamental values such as stag horn, bird
nest, tree ferns and many other varieties are displayed here.
Cactus House
The
Cactus House of desert plants or succulents are sun-loving plants in
nature and species of unique attractions with prickly thorns all over.
At least 60 varieties are found grown and displayed here. Species such
as Echinopsis, Echinocactus grusonii, Cleistocactus, Trichocerus,
Opuntia and Euphorbias pleasant to the eyes are displayed here. Cacti
are varieties of fascinating sun loving plants come with different
sizes, shapes and structures that need a lot of sunshine to thrive and
flourish. The physical appearance of the cactus is able to withstand
drought and at the same time reduces transpiration.
