Kapitan Kling Mosque

The mosque is situated on Lebuh Pitt, close to the city centre. It reflects Moorish architecture which was common in Malaysia at the dawn of the 19 century. One should be properly attired (particularly women) and shoes removed before entering the mosque.

Snake Temple

As one goes towards the Penang International Airport at Bayan Lepas, one cannot miss the Snake Temple which sits amidst factories and housing complexes along the highway. It is believe that this temple was founded by Priest Chor Soo Kong in 1850 for Taoist worshippers, and was known as the Temple of the Azure Cloud. One will be fascinated by the venomous pit vipers moving freely around the temple and by stories surrounding the snakes. These snakes have not been known to attack any of the numerous visitors to the temple.

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

Dating back to 1883, this temple is believed to be the oldest Hindu temple in Penang. This building, rich in Hindu architecture, is the traditional home of the Hindu deity, Lord Subramaniam. The statue is richly decorated in gold, silver, diamonds and emeralds and is invaluable. The deity is taken out on a procession in a silver chariot during the annual Thaipusam festival.

Kek Lok Si Temple

The temple is the largest and one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples in South-East Asia. It offers an interesting mixture of Chinese, Thai and Burmese architecture. Dominated by a seven-tier pagoda, the Ban Po Thar, it rises 30 metres high. Work on this temple began in 1890 by Thai, Burmese and Chinese craftsmen and took more than two decades to complete.

Fort Cornwallis

At the spot where Captain Francis Light landed in Penang, a famous concrete fort was built in 1800, known as Fort Cornwallis. It is strategically located upon a hill overlooking the Esplanade. The fort gives one a panoramic view of the Straits of Malacca and the neighbouring areas. It has now been converted into an open-air amphitheater and large crowds can be seen there all the time.

Penang Hill

Situated about 1821 metres above sea level, Penang Hill provides a spectacular view of the Straits of Malacca. In fact, a bird's eye-view can be obtained from here. One has to board a funicular train at Air Itam for a 30-minute ride up the hill. Temperatures can drop to l8°C at the peak. There are many fine bungalows and mansions up the hill. One of the earliest mansions built there belonged to Captain Francis Light. Other sights are a tea garden, a Hindu temple and a church.

Botanic Gardens

Penang has one of the earliest and most beautiful Botanic Gardens in Malaysia. Situated on an acreage of some 30 hectares of lush green tropical trees and plants, the gardens are best known for their families of mischievous monkeys which dangle from the branches of the trees overhead or roam freely on the ground. These monkeys can be very friendly to the extent of eating out of your palm.

Butterfly Farm

The Butterfly Farm at Teluk Bahang is the world's first tropical live butterfly exhibition, and houses over 150 species of butterflies and local insects in their natural habitat. A lily pond, artificial waterfalls and a rock garden enhance the beauty of the surroundings. The farm also serves as a breeding area and there are about 4,000 to 5,000 live butterflies at any one time.

Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang

These areas offer all the scenic delights of a tropical island paradise - stretches of golden sandy beaches, clear blue seas and tiny secluded coves enclosed by clusters of rocks. Penang is a resort island in full bloom with numerous hotels of international standards fronting the sea along the beaches on its northern coastlines. The ranges of facilities and amenities available here makes it an ideal playground for worshippers of the sun and the sea.

Shopping in Penang can be a delightful experience. In the great tradition of its past as a trading post, the Penang of today caters for a variety of tastes, pleasing even the most discerning of shoppers. Browse around the shops in modern air-conditioned comfort at Penang Road, Lebuh Campbell, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Kling, Lebuh Chulia and Lebuh Pantai and at KOMTAR, the multi-storey office and shopping complex. The latest shopping complexes include the Midlands One-Stop Centre, Sunshine Square and the Bukit Jambul Complex.

Jewellery shoppers should head for such areas like Jalan Bishop and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Kling, Lebuh Campbell and Jalan Penang. General produce may be purchased from Jalan Penang, Lebuh Campbell, the Penang Bazaar and Lebuh Bishop.

Antiques, curios and a cluster of junk shops can be found in Jalan Penang, Lebuh Pantai, Lorong Kulit and Lebuh Bishop. Native products can be found at Chowrasta Market, Lebuh Queen, Air Itam and Kek Lok Si Temple. Numerous roadside stalls and a moving night market are also excellent hunting ground for avid buyers.
